Wicked Weather

Going into the spring, North Texas was in drought conditions for the third year in a row. Lake Levon, our primary source of water (and not very tasty, I might add!) was down 17 FEET at the end of last summer. The rainy season, normally January through March, was non-existant this year, as it was last year. We are under ‘Stage 3′ water restrictions which means we can only water our landscape once a week, on trash day. Some towns fine violators, or even shut their water off! It really puts a damper (no pun intended) on having a nice looking yard and we can forget about flowers–they just wilt in the hot Texas heat.

This seemed to change a bit in the last week. We had severe storms Friday night, with a visit from a tornado to an adjoining town (nobody was hurt-all property damage, thankfully). There was unbelievable flooding in Ennis and Waco, both south of Dallas. Dallas got its fair share of flooding too. After all the rain and run off, Lake Levon is now at only FIVE feet below normal. Wahoo!!! There are more severe storms on their way tonight and then, we’ll be in the 60’s after the last few days of 75-85 degrees. I’ve learned that no matter where you are, the locals say this: “You know what they say about [fill in the state or region here], just wait a minute and it will change.” That’s the nature of weather, and fortunately, science has helped us get really good at predicting most of it in advance.

I doubt that we’ll be able to start watering more often now, nor do I think that I’ll be able to fire up my water feature, since we’ve learned that water really is a valuable resource and we need to protect what we have. For now though, everything is green and lush. I’ll enjoy it before we head into the hot, dry, brown summer.
